DO NOT GO THERE – Places not to travel to, due to pollution, dangers, crime

Posted on July 23, 2009

Do not go there!

Polution, crime and long lines. A new guide book made by Peter Greenberg guides you away from the worst travel destinations on the earth.

Places you very well can avoid is listed up by Mr. Greenberg, and also lists up the airports you should avoid and at what times it is wise to visit sights around the world. A handy little guide, with some other perspective than other travel guides available to you.

Go there in the winter: According to Greenberg the lines at the Eiffeil tower in Paris is worst in the summer (big surprise?). He recommends of course to visit the sights in Paris in November and December months.

The internet is full of travel tips sites and guides that tells you were to go and what to see. An example of a travel guide is TripAdvisor

However, now there is a guide book available to you that tell you where you should not travel and make sure travelers stay away from these places.

The author calls his guide book; «Don't go there!» And is listing up places not to go to and should avoid and at times you should avoid some places.

Here you will find a good overview of travel destinations that at first glance looks exotic and exiting, but be aware that some of these places can have surprises you would like to stay away from.

The guide book lists up the worst airports in the world and common tourist traps in addition to cover topics like pollution, crime and the worst environmental sinners.

Stinking beaches and hazardous roads have also been covered by the investigative traveler.

Several cruise ships are mentioned as not having acceptable sanitary conditions, lack of food hygiene and falsification of discharge logs.

You will in addition to advices get anecdotes about places you should avoid visiting.

For example the increased pollution in Delhi in India is caused by the increasing care sales amongst the normal people since a Indian car like Nano is sold for around 2500 USD which more people can afford in today’s India. The paradox is that some of the new cars pollute more than the older models according to what is written in the book.

The air in Calcutta is so bad that the police has to carry oxygen tanks with them., so you would not like to go for a walk and sightseeing there, unless you are a heavy smoker and do not mind to get some extra chemicals down your throat.

New York is a splendid city to visit, but be aware that statistically there will be a hurricane in the Big Apple soon. According to the guide book from Greenberg, the geography tells that the east coast of U.S.A is vulnerable to hurricanes and big storms, and big storms come on a regular basis to these areas through the last 100 years. The last big event was back in 1938, so watch out now.

In Pattaya polluted sanitary water is dumped into the ocean from large apartment complexes. The authorities made a law that complexes larger than 60 units should clean up their waste water before dumping it into the ocean. However, the entrepreneurs just found out to save costs they build complexes with 59 units in them and can therefore continue to dump sewage into the beach waters.

In the U.S.A you can visit the garlic capital called Gilroy in California, which is Americas arm pit. Battle Mountain in Nevada and the largest hand made well in Greensburg in Kansas, or maybe not.

Newfoundland Travel: Avalon Peninsula

Posted on June 28, 2009

Sunday, July 20, 2003

Our destination today was Terra Nova National Park, on the East Coast of Newfoundland. We were very surprised at the fees they charged: $5.00 per day per adult for use plus $21.00 per day for camping with no amenities (electricity was $5.00 extra per night). The area boasts arboreal forests reaching to the sea. There are many hiking trails, most between four and ten kilometers in length.

We went to the marine interpretation center. A ranger explains the different aquatic animals they have in their touch tank: stars, scallops, various crabs, barnacles, etc. It was very informative. They also have tanks with local fish in them: cod, caplain, etc.

Monday, July 21, 2003

Took to some of the trails today to view the wildlife and the scenery, which Terra Nova has to offer. We saw three plovers, a herring gull, a whiskey Jack (a gray jay), and squirrels, which are not indigenous to Newfoundland. We saw moose tracks and droppings and bear tracks, but no moose or bear yet.

After a day of hiking, it was early to bed.

Drove to St. Johns, the capital Newfoundland. We parked at Pitty Park in St. Johns.  This is located close to Memorial University.

Until 1948 Newfoundland was an independent country. On July 22, 1948, they voted whether to become part of Canada. The first ballot was noncommittal. After some negotiations with the Canadian government and necessary concessions, the people voted confederation by a very narrow margin. Many Newfoundlanders, even today many wished that confederation never took place. The other options they had was to become a member of the USA or remain independent.

Drove down to La Manche (French for the sleeve) Provincial Park. We were put in the overflow section, which is perfect for us, because the area is wide open. There is no electricity or water, except for boiling available in any of the provincial parks. So we are happy to pay $13.00 Canadian per night.  We are spitting distance to the lake, which has water the temperature of bath water. There are hiking trails. One leads to a picturesque falls, where swimming is allowed, but not recommended. Another leads to the ruins of the town of La Manche. After the Confederation in 1949, the residents of the town were given the opportunity to resettle to a larger town, because it was too costly to maintain roads and offer other services, such as electricity. Most refused. After a major storm hit the area in the 1960s, the town had been wiped out and so the people were resettled anyway. Only the foundations of the buildings remain today of this once prosperous fishing village. Similar stories exist for many of the fishing villages on the island. When the fisheries died from dredging, the life expectancy of the Newfoundland fisherman was also terminal. Many chose to give up the old ways, which originally had brought their famil Read more

Travel to Devon in England and Feast on an abundance of Traditional Devonian Villages

Posted on July 1, 2007

Devon is a County of immense beauty and a very popular summer destination for British tourists as well as foreign visitors. Its varied landscape and interesting Cities and Towns offer a lot to the traveller and its location on the South West tip of the Country gives it a milder climate compared to the rest of England. In fact, the South coast is known as the English Riviera!

Like all of the United Kingdom, the County of Devonshire is steeped in history and there is evidence scattered across the landscape and inside its main Towns and Villages. Most people who visit Devon, come for the seaside resorts like Torquay, Dawlish and Paignton, but there is so much more for the visitor to the region, though everyone enjoys the famous Devon Cream Teas!

The Gateway City of Exeter is a vibrant destination in itself with a buzzing University population and plenty to see and do. The City dates back to the Roman era and was once a stronghold garrison for the Romans known as Isca. There are some remnants of this bygone era and a lot of the local findings can be seen in the small but interesting Royal Albert Museum. The City Centre has many sights in a relatively compact area with the fabulous Norman Cathedral looking over it all. On the Cathedral yard you will find the Clarence Hotel which is widely known as the first ever Hotel in England.

Nearby to the Cathedral is the favourite lunch spot of Rougemont Castle and Northernhay Gardens, which is a lovely place to take a stroll and take in the medieval ruins and the place of the last ever Witch hanging in the Country. Just off the entrance to Rougemont Castle is the Medieval Underground Passages and tours are offered throughout the week which is surprisingly enjoyable.

Exeter Quayside has had a revamp in the last few years and is now a popular place to spend an afternoon, with quaint but popular pubs and eateries. It is also home to most of Exeters Nightlife and on Friday and Saturday nights it can get quite rowdy.

Outside of the County Capital there is plenty more to see and the vast ghostly Moorland that is Dartmoor is a popular destination for Hikers and is famous worldwide for the Sherlock Holmes story, the "Hounds of the Baskervilles".

It is easy to get to from Exeter and many people flock to the more accessible spots of Two Bridges and Hay Tor. The Moors are covered in Bronze Age mounds and history buffs will enjoy discovering forgotten sites as they walk across the misty landscape. Beware though, Dartmoor is notorious for its changing weather and it is easy to get lost. Visitors should remember to take a map and compass and to let someone know where they are going.

South Devon is as previously stated a tourist hotspot and can get very busy during peak seasons like Summer and Easter. With beautiful long sandy beaches and the typical English seaside activities, it has plenty to offer families. What a lot of visit Read more
